Veterans Day is approaching, and the Big Country is starting the celebration.
The West Texas Rehabilitation Center hosted a recognition dinner and a viewing of the film, Honor Flight for local WWII Veterans.
Among them was Clovis Thompson, a WWII marine from Paducah, Texas.
"I joined the navy, but then I changed my mind and joined the Marine corps,” says Thompson.
Thompson recalls his time serving in places like Japan, Guadalcanal, and Guam. He received a silver star after being wounded in Okinawa.
“It just cooked it and went in so, they had to just dig the bullet out of my shoulder,” says Thompson.
Before retirement, Thompson was in the roofing business. He also had several shoe stores, including one here and Abilene.
