SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State University's Russian Enrichment Program will host a presentation by Dr. Roger Reese, a professor of history at Texas A&M University, at 6 p.m. Thursday in the ASU Academic Building, 2502 Dena Drive.

"The Red Army 1918-1936" presentation will take place in Room 135 of the academic building and is free and open to the public.

Reese will illustrate the formative history of the Soviet Red Army and the complex turn of events after the October Revolution of 1917.

A faculty member at Texas A&M since 1990, Reese teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on European, Russian, Soviet and modern military history. His research specialty is the social history of the Soviet Red Army and Imperial Russian Army. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters, as well as five books on the Red Army:

  • "Stalin's Reluctant Soldiers" (1996)

  • "Why Stalin's Soldiers Fought" (2011)
  • "The Imperial Russian Army in Peace, War, and Revolution, 1856-1917" (2019)

Reese's presentation is sponsored by the Department of English and Modern Languages and the ASU Russian Club. ASU's Russian Enrichment Program hosts guest speakers and other presentations during each academic year to encourage the study of Russian language and culture, according to an ASU press release.

Everyone attending the presentation will need to complete ASU's visitor wellness screening and be prepared to show their screening completion badge, as well as have their temperature checked before entering the Academic Building. Masks/face coverings are strongly encouraged, but are not mandatory.
