SAN ANGELO, Texas — This holiday season, some families will struggle to provide gifts on top of their basic needs. The Family Shelter of San Angelo is gearing up to make those family’s wishes come true through its Adopt-a-Mom program.
“We’re a safe haven for survivors of domestic violence. Each year, we ask our residents and non-residents to fill out a wish list and we ask the community to help fulfill those wish lists,” Family Shelter of San Angelo Children's Advocate, Hilarie Knight, said.
The shelter provides victims of domestic violence with emergency assistance and provides a safe place to stay. It also provides counseling services and assistance for victims, whether they are living on or off-site.
“Sometimes it’s not an option for them to just have a Christmas, so it’s something that we really like to do to offer them the opportunity to have a good Christmas,” Knight said.
Knight remembers last year when a family asked for pots and pans because they did not have a set. She said the family received pots and pans as their gift for Christmas and it meant everything to them.
Knight says the program would not be possible without the help of the San Angelo community.
“Each year, I'm just blown away by the generosity that the community shows to the shelter and the families that we serve,” Knight said.
The shelter began receiving gifts in October, and Knight said most of the non-residents start picking up their gifts in the days leading up to Christmas.
The shelter is looking for volunteers to help wrap gifts for families.
