SAN ANGELO, Texas — San Angelo's NAACP Unit 6219 President, Sherley Spears, said the #WeAreDoneDying Rally is a way to discuss the events taking place across the country, including the criminal injustice African American men and women are experiencing.

The rally is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Saturday, June 6 at the corner of Martin Luther King Dr. and 11th Street. It will take place outside of the Ministerial Alliance Campus in San Angelo.

Spears said, the event is an opportunity to give a voice to the community and the NAACP.  Elected officials, NAACP leaders, and ministers will be among those speaking at Saturday’s rally. In addition to the murders that have taken place in the U.S., the rally will focus on four areas of policy change under the NAACP #WeAreDoneDying campaign. This includes criminal injustice reform, economics, health and voting in minority communities.

Spears said, “It’s not just for the murders, but that will first and foremost be on our minds. So, we are using this is an opportunity to get people to get connected, to see that we are doing some things together as a community, that some of these things will take on change.”

The NAACP's national office requires the members to wear masks when  gathering in public. The organization is asking attendees to wear face coverings or masks as well. Spears said, some face masks will be made available at the event and there will be social distancing to the extent that it’s possible.

In order to heal the wounds of injustice in the United States, Spears said, “I think we need to sit down and have some discussion with one another and try to understand that the issues that we have, are really issues that come primarily from the African American's and other minority communities. So, I think that we have to talk to city leadership, county, state leadership. Seriously listen, actively listen, and then work together to strategically to come up with things in your individual communities and cities, and then county and state.”

She also said, if African Americans and other minorities would go out and vote, leadership in communities could look different. She notes, to not only vote for presidents, but to also vote for City Council, City Commissioner, and school board representatives, etc...  Spears said, citizens should spend time learning more about who is running for office, to make sure those individuals will make a difference where they live.
