Spring break gives students a week to not stress about school

Spring break is also a week where some students might stress about their next meal.

CHRISTOVAL, Texas — Spring break are the words that will put a smile on the faces of many students across the Concho Valley.

Students will get a week off school which means no homework, no tests and no class. The week off of school also means no school lunch.

For the small town of Christoval, the school lunch might be the only meal some students will get.

However, there is answer to the lunch problem for those students. The answer is backpack program.

The program was started 11 years ago by Georgia Fischer and the help of the community.

"The community is very involved,"Fischer said. "The community and the people are very generous, it's all of us, it's our church it's Christoval."

The backpack program sends students home every Friday with 12 non-perishable food items. The food items are also easy-open for the students.

On school breaks, Fischer makes sure the students of the community are taken care of.

"We always try to do extra you know for Christmas and Spring Break holidays," Fischer said.

They will put extra items in the backpacks for the students to take home for the week off of school.

Fischer wants to keep the backpack program going for as long as she can. It is a rewarding feeling for her knowing the students will have their next meal.

"It's hard to even describe what a blessing it is," Fischer said.

Fischer has made special connections with the students, and gives them a hug every week they pick up their backpack.

A connection she calls simply amazing.
