Abilene PD warns shoppers about purse thief

The Abilene Police Department said the thief is targeting women shopping at grocery stores, who leave their purses in carts. Wallets are being stolen.

ABILENE, Texas — The Abilene Police Department issued an "advisory/warning" Thursday, saying a thief is targeting shoppers, particularly woman, at grocery stores.

According to the advisory, posted on the department's Facebook page, "A black male has been captured on surveillance video targeting females shopping with their purses in carts. When the victim is turned away from the shopping cart, the thief strikes, stealing wallets from purses."

The department asks citizens to keep an eye on valuables and "keep credit cards and cell phones on you instead of your purse, or keep your purse zipped/snapped shut, on your shoulder."

Anyone who recognizes the man in the photos is asked to contact Abilene Crime Stoppers at 325-676-8477.

The APD said the thief has targeted stores in Wichita Falls, Lubbock and Abilene.
