UPDATE: I-20 homicide suspect in custody

ABILENE, Texas — UPDATE (6 p.m. Oct. 2): Abilene Police have made an arrest in the homicide of a 36-year-old Abilene man found dead in his vehicle Sept. 21 on Interstate 20.

According to an APD news release, on Friday, Oct. 2, the department's Criminal Investigation Division arrested Jordan Spraggins, 26, of Sweetwater for the murder of Steven Phariss.

Investigators secured an arrest warrant before taking Spraggins into custody at a business in Sweetwater. He will be held at the Taylor County Jail and charged with homicide.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Abilene Police Department is investigating the death of a 26-year-old Abilene man as a homicide.

According to an APD press release, APD’s Criminal Investigation Division detectives are investigating the death that occurred on Interstate 20 the evening of Monday, Sept. 21. 

A call of a crash came into police dispatch just after 11 p.m. at mile marker 280. Officers arrived and found a man dead in a vehicle.

The man, identified as Steven Pharris, 26, of Abilene, was driving a 2004 maroon or red Chevy Silverado extended cab pickup truck.

According to the release, it appears Pharris was headed east on Interstate 20. The truck crossed the median and ended up facing the opposite direction in the westbound lane of I-20.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
