Police identify man whose body was found in South Austin on Sunday

A caller reported seeing a body in a neighborhood off South Congress Avenue early on Sunday, April 17.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department has identified the man whose body was found on Milton Street in South Austin early on the morning of Sunday, April 17.

APD initially said a call came in at around 4:30 a.m. on April 17. A caller said they had found a body on the road, near the 200 block of East Milton Street.

On April 17, APD said that when police arrived, they found the body of a deceased male with an apparent gunshot wound in the "upper part" of his body.

On April 20, APD provided updated information, saying officers responded to calls of a person on the ground in the 200 block of Milton Street at approximately 4 a.m. on April 17. Upon arrival at the scene, APD officers and Austin-Travis County EMS medics located a male victim in the roadway with obvious trauma to his body.

Life-saving measures were attempted, but the man was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene at 4:43 a.m. He was later identified as 36-year-old Cory Nicholas Arizmendez.

APD said homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to process the scene. On April 28, the Travis County Medical Examiner's office conducted an autopsy and determined the official manner of death as a homicide.

APD was initially investigating this incident as a suspicious death, but it is now being investigated as Austin's twentieth homicide of 2022.
