UPDATE: San Angelo man found guilty of manslaughter, tampering with evidence

SAN ANGELO, Texas — UPDATE (March 16, 2022): Nathan Gonzalez has been found guilty of manslaughter and tampering with evidence in the 2020 death of Carlos Galvan. A Tom Green County jury returned the verdict March 15, 2022.

A sentencing hearing started March 15 and continued into March 16. At the hearing, the jury sentenced Gonzalez to 12 years in prison for the manslaughter charge and two years in prison for the tampering with evidence charge, according to a statement from the Tom Green County DA's office. Gonzalez was eligible for probation, according to the release.

The release from the DA's office included the following statement on behalf of Galvan's family: "On behalf of the family of Carlos Galvan, we want to thank the jury for their careful consideration in this difficult case. We would also like to thank the law enforcement officers that investigated this case. As always, our office remains committed to the safety of our community and seeking justice not only for the victims of crimes but also to the family members of victims of crimes."

Asst. District Attorneys Brent Ratekin and Jensen Martinez prosecuted the case for the state.

ORIGINAL STORY (Aug. 2, 2020): San Angelo Police Department officers were dispatched at approximately 2:20 p.m. Saturday to 212 Koberlin St for a report of a shooting victim.

According to an SAPD press release, when officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim, identified as Carlos Galvan,18, with a gunshot wound.

Galvan was transported to Shannon Medical Center and was pronounced dead shortly after.

The release also said, Nathan Gonzalez, 20, initially called in the incident and claimed he witnessed a suspect fleeing the scene before police arrived.

SAPD detectives took over the investigation and found that Gonzalez had accidentally shot Galvan. Gonzalez hid the weapon and lied about seeing a suspect flee the scene.

Statements made by Gonzalez during the interview about the events that resulted in Galvan's death led to him being arrested and charged with manslaughter.

Gonzalez was booked in to the Tom Green County Jail.
