UPDATE (3:10 p.m. Feb. 10): San Angelo Police have provided an update on a shooting that happened at a north San Angelo apartment complex Tuesday afternoon.

The SAPD said it is now investigating the case from the Cheyenne Crossing Apartments, 17 W. 31st St., as a homicide.

Officers were dispatched to the location just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, for the report of a shooting victim. On their way, officers were told a woman had run from the scene on West 31st towards Grape Creek Road.

Responding officers found the victim lying in the complex parking lot, with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso.

He was taken to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance but later died from his injuries.  The victim was identified as Roy Perez Sr. of San Angelo.

The alleged suspect was found by officers at West 32nd Street and Grape Creek Road and arrested. The woman, a 23-year-old San Angelo resident, was taken to the department’s Criminal Investigations Division Annex Office for a formal interview.

Several witnesses and residents were found and interviewed during the lengthy field investigation and a discarded gun was found near the scene by Police Service Dog Xander.

The preliminary investigation shows the woman witnessed Perez assaulting another male at the property just prior to the shooting. When the woman tried to intervene, Perez chased her with a knife and the woman shot Perez in an apparent act of self-defense.

In conjunction with the District Attorney’s Office, it was decided that no charges would be filed at this time.  This is an ongoing investigation and no other information is available for release.
