TOM GREEN COUNTY, Texas — A Tom Green County Sheriff's Office deputy is being treated at Shannon Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries he received when a man dragged him with his vehicle during a traffic stop.

According to a TGCSO press release, on Tuesday, the deputy initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of FM 388 and Longhorn Drive. During the stop, dispatch confirmed the driver had an outstanding warrant for Class A theft.

When the deputy tried to arrest the driver, identified as Cody Alexander Witt, Witt tried to take off in his vehicle and dragged the deputy a significant distance.

The deputy was able to bring the vehicle to a stop and Witt was arrested approximately 500 feet from the scene of the original traffic stop.

Two good Samaritans who witnessed the incident responded and helped the deputy, helping restraint Witt. Additional officers from the San Angelo Police Department and the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office also provided assistance.

Witt was also taken to Shannon Medical Center for evaluation.

The incident is being investigated by the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigation Division. As this is an active investigation, additional charges are expected, the release said.
