Dry scooping pre-workout supplement could cause health problems

Whether it's exercise videos, workout clothes, equipment or nutrition - fitness has become the latest craze. Social media allows you see it all, especially when people take things too far like the “dry shot challenge,” in which they consume pre-workout supplement powder straight from the jar.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — With all of the social media sites available, you may have seen one of the latest viral "dry shot" challenge, in which people consume powdered pre-work supplements, directly from the container.

“A lot of people do feel invincible and you’re not scared of it because you don’t know,” Justin Palmer Angelo State University student, said.

The unknown consequences with the new internet challenge is what is causing concern.

“A few times where I didn’t read the instructions and I took too much, and I started to get anxiety couldn’t focus and I started to get really jittery it was scary,” Palmer said.

Although he has never participated in the challenge, Palmer said he did fall to peer pressure of trying a dry scoop of pre-workout supplement.

“A couple friends we would all do it we would dry scoop before football games to get that rush of energy because we were addicted to it,“ Palmer said.

Palmer said exercise wasn't the only reason behind his dry scoop use he said simply just wanting to stay up later to hang out with friends would make him take a scoop.

“Looking back those were just big mistakes and wasn’t worth it,” Palmer said.

Today, Palmer has a nutritionist and mentor who has helped him find the proper way to stay healthy and take the caffeine-filled supplement.

“Now I know what I’m doing I take the appropriate dosages and I also know the difference between the different ingredients and I’m smarter about it,“ Palmer said.
