Finding the Fallen

It's a journey to honor veterans who were forgotten, left, or had no family. Missing In America Project members and Patriot Guard Riders escorted a group of veterans from Amarillo to a cemetery in San Antonio for a proper and respectful internment. They went through many of the communities in the Concho Valley. Our Senora Scott caught up with them in Menard.

MENARD, TX — A mission to honor fallen veterans who didn't have any relatives brought communities across the state together to create one large family.

"It's been incredible. Every small community has come out to greet the patriot guard riders as well as our funeral coach that holds the 8 veterans that we're taking to Ft. Sam Houston.

The Missing In America Project is a group of volunteers across the country that call on funeral homes, county courthouses, all those that would be the caretakers of the cremains of the unclaimed and homeless. And what the Missing In America folks do is we research those names who have been on the shelves for many, many years for the possibility of veterans who might be among them. When we get back and find out that they're honorable veterans, then an appointment is made in a national cemetery to honor them and show our respects.

We do, do our best to contact the family, the next of kin, but many go unclaimed. In fact of all of these that we're carrying today we've attempted for many years and the folks have tried to do that unsuccessfully.

And many of these that we're carrying came home without much recognition. So, this is our opportunity to give them that chance to be recognized and to pay our respects for what they did for us to maintain our freedom. I would say we're proud of them,” Joel Carver, a representative for the Missing In America Project in the Texas Panhandle said.

When they get to the Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, their 500-mile mission will be complete.
