#FitWithFox #AmpedUp – Roller Derby

It’s another way of staying fit without hitting the gym. It’s called roller derby and it welcomes all body types and backgrounds! While many call this a tough sport, others say it’s more of a sisterhood. KIDY’s Sally Jaramillo has details on how it works and what it means to be in derby.

While many call this a tough sport, others say it’s more of a sisterhood.

More than skating, roller derby keeps the body active, stronger and it empowers its players.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams skating in the same direction.

What’s neat about the sport is the names given to each player.

Coach “Jeep Strangle-Her” says derby is the new culture.

“Literally is one of the fastest growing, if not the fastest growing, sports right now. They are popping up everywhere. Leagues are popping up everywhere,” Jeep Strangle-Her said.

But outside of the physical element of derby is the bond that you build.

“It’s a contact sport. You work hard together, and afterwards, it brings you closer to each other. It’s a really good bonding sport,” Jeep Strangle-Her said.

From working the mind, body and soul, derby has it all!

“Everything, everything, but the legs, the core, I mean, everything is getting a good, solid workout. And what is cool is that you’re roller-skating, so you don’t know that you’re actually working your entire body.”

Staying in shape is a goal, but safety always comes first.

“Typically, derby stand, you’ll see a lot of these skaters are in this position the entire time – a jam lasts for two minutes.”

When we asked members what derby means to them, they said…

“You get to have lots of friends, and you get to be yourself.”

“I really enjoy jamming.”

“Like, jumping and doing the warm-ups.”

Besides exercising the mind and body, the biggest thing in derby is the family you make.
