SAN ANGELO, Texas — As the Thanksgiving holiday weekend arrives, the need for blood donors increases.
According to a press release from Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services), most blood shortages happen during and just after Thanksgiving. Many people are traveling, which leads to more accidents, and blood usage going up dramatically.
The release said fewer blood donations are made because donors are traveling, which is not a good scenario if you need blood.
To help reduce a potential blood shortage, donors can go to the Vitalant Donation Center on Black Friday and Gray Saturday to donate blood, plasma and/or platelets.
"Escape the Black Friday madness in the quiet comfort of a donor chair – watch a movie, listen to your own music, text (yes – you CAN text while you donate) AND Save LIVES!" the release said.
The THANKS FOR GIVING drive is open to all who donate on Black Friday or Gray Saturday at the Vitalant Donation Center. Donors will receive a $15 Market Street gift card and the knowledge that they saved up to three lives.
Blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 lbs. and be in good health (16-22-year-old donors will need to meet additional height and weight requirements). 16-year-old donors must present a minor donor permit signed by a parent or guardian – go to vitalant.org to find the form.
Thanks for Giving!
