NAACP to host virtual COVID-19 forum

The forum will focus on providing information, tools and other resources.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo NAACP chapter hosted a virtual forum Thursday called "Sisters in the Spirit - InfluencerHers" during COVID-19.

The goal of the forum was to talk about the influence of women in the church and other leadership positions with the hope to help African American communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kimberley Yancy is a certified history teacher who has worked with children since 2004. She has also been married to her husband for 25 years and is a mother of four, as well as the first lady of New Vision Baptist Church in Galveston County.

“It’s an amazing time to come together and talk about building. where do we go from here," Yancy said.

She also shared her story of having coronavirus. She received her test back in 48 hours and tested positive for COVID-19 March 28, 2020.

“Some of the strategies my husband and I have used and some of the strategies NAACP is using to inform the public about the severity of this virus," Yancy said.

The forum focused on talking about the influence of the church and other leaders in the community.

“Some of us are leaders in the communities and organizations and we have to make sure that we are saying it loud and clear so we won’t have to lose lives unnecessarily due to lack of information," she said.

Yancy and her husband are in recovery and plan to donate blood to the Houston Methodist Hospital with the hopes of contributing to helping to find a vaccine.

“Let's look after one another until we get past this and we will. we’ll get past this," Yancy said.

The NAACP has also been in contact with government officials to see what the reopening of communities may look like.
