Healthcare professionals share ways to protect against COVID-19 this holiday season

West Texas healthcare professionals advise the public to take precaution this holiday season to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — With the holiday season in full swing, many will be celebrating with family and friends. But with the new wave of COVID-19 cases and the omicron variant, it’s important to stay safe and healthy.

“Be really careful of people coming in from out of town from places that have lot’s of COVID cases especially if we think it’s the Omicron,” Tom Green County Local Health Authority, Dr. James Vretis, said.

With the fast spread of the omicron variant, Vretis says it’s best to keep your distance from your loved ones.

“They can be your family members, you can love them but you don't have to hug them this year that way you can hug them next year,” he said.

Abilene/Taylor County Local Health Authority Dr. Gary Goodnight said it’s best to avoid large indoor gatherings and if possible to move any indoor events outside.

“The best thing about this holiday season is it's going to be beautiful weather so ventilation, being outdoors and sharing a lot of time with your family outside is going to help with the omicron variant,” Goodnight said.

Dr. Krishna Vukoti, owner of Angelo Pharmacy, said it’s best to be cautious and safe and take the necessary measures to avoid getting sick.

“Washing hands and wearing masks has a great potential to contain all the bad stuff from our mouths and noses to other people,” he said.

Vukoti said the COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to stay protected against  the coronavirus and and its variants during festivities.

“I highly encourage anyone to go get vaccinated and if you're already vaccinated, go get the booster shot. This is the best way to prepare for the holiday season,” Vukoti said

Healthcare professionals are suggesting to take all the necessary precautions to stay protected during this holiday season.
