A study is underway at the University of Texas Arlington Research Institute to see if technology can give companionship to older adults.

Researchers are using a robot reciting Shakespeare with senior citizens, in what is known as “participatory art.”

Doctor Julienne Greer is an assistant professor of Social Robots and Performance — and she says previous studies have shown this type of interaction can help sharpen the minds and spirits of the elderly.

“We are very hopeful the same positive results that happen in [the] human-human model will happen with the human-robot model,” Dr. Greer said.

Researchers say in two weeks they’ll start conducting more trials and gathering data at area senior living facilities.
