Shannon Clinic is hosting walk-in flu shot clinics Oct. 15 and 17, as well as Nov. 12 and 14. The clinics will be held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Shannon Clinic Jackson, 2237 S. Jackson St.

The clinic will accept and file insurance, or patients can pay $35 per shot. This flu shot clinic is for patients age 18 and up, and the high-dose flu vaccination is also available. No appointment is necessary.

Shannon Clinic Pediatrics will also be hosting walk-in flu shot clinics for children on Oct. 12 and Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shannon Clinic Pediatrics, 225 E. Beauregard Ave. This year, parents have the option to get their shot along with their child. Shots are $10 per shot for children and $35 per shot for parents for self-pay patients, or the clinic will file insurance.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people receive the flu vaccine as soon as the vaccine becomes available in their community. Vaccination before December is best, since the timing ensures that protective antibodies are in place before flu activity is typically at its highest. The flu shot is an inactivated vaccine that contains killed virus and is given with a needle, usually in the arm. Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body and the antibodies provide protection against influenza virus infection.

The flu shot is approved for people ages 6 months or older, including healthy people as well as those with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.
