ABILENE, Texas — Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Abilene has partnered with the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to help uninsured women receive no-cost health screenings in the Big Country.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to remind women to get their breast screenings during this time.

CPRIT is a state agency that funds cancer research in Texas. Initially, CPRIT was funded in 2007, and reauthorized for funding in 2019. The agency received a $6B initiative towards prevention, academic research and product development research.

“Through programs such as the CPRIT’s program at Texas Tech, there are resources available for uninsured and underinsured women. I encourage everyone to seek out these resources,” CPRIT Chief Prevention Officer, Ramona Magid, said.

Regular health screenings can help prevent and lower the risk of death by detecting the cancer before symptoms develop. Screenings for breast cancer help detect cancerous cells in the body and get the required treatment before the tumor can develop.

“I can't stress enough the importance of double checking and just knowing your body, early detection can save your life with any type of cancer but primarily we are talking about breast cancer and cervical cancer,” TTUHSC program lead specialist, Nancy Silva, said.

The Breast and Cervical Care for West Texas Program is focused on increasing the rate of breast cancer screening in West Texas.
