A report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau shows that there were fewer tailgate thefts reported in 2017 than in past years. But, what can you do to make sure your tailgate stays right where it belongs.

"Tailgate are easy to come by because few people, including myself, do remember to actually lock them,” said Shane Bearden, auto consultant at Ric Henry’s Auto Service.

Bearden says newer vehicles tend to come with tailgate locks but for those that don't there are locks you can buy and install yourself.

"We do have some that come with a key," said Bearden. “They have their own key code that they utilize that is already from the vehicle so it actually codes the lock to your existing key.”

Bearden says buying a $20 to $40 lock can be a money-saver in the long run.

"Tailgates can run anywhere from $2000 to the ones with steps and back up cameras for $5000 or more,” said Bearden.

Thieves usually end up selling those stolen parts on the black market.

Reports for stolen tailgates are dropping however Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio remain on the list for top three cities where tailgates are still being stolen.
