Hispanic Leadership Council organizes committee for upcoming 2020 Census

Abilene community members gathered to learn about the formation of the 2020 Census committee by the Hispanic Leadership Council.

ABILENE, Texas — The 2020 Census is fast-approaching and many in Abilene are preparing for it, such as the Hispanic Leadership Council.

They are taking part in the upcoming census by forming a committee to better serve the Hispanic population. The goal of the committee is also to avoid any confusion over the census.

“A lot of them are scared to know if they are going to be asked the citizenship question, which we know that's not going to happen," HLC president, Samuel Garcia, said.

The primary focus of the committee is to promote the census to the under-counted parts of the city. Members of the Abilene community gathered at the Abilene Public Library to learn about the roles they could take in the process.

"We are going to have a lot of people there that speak Spanish, and just that in itself, that somebody can explain to them in Spanish what it means, just the language barrier, the trust,” Garcia said.
