Homelessness among AISD students

Donations needed for homelessness among AISD students.

ABILENE, TX. — In 2017, 1,495 students under the Abilene Independent School District were dealing with homelessness.

This new school year, 756 students fall under this category. Of these students, 687 are doubled up.

"We've got kids that are with their parents, they lose their home and they move in with someone else,” says AISD homelessness liaison, Darrin Cox.

For three years now, Cox has been collecting items for these children. Socks, underwear, shoes, clothes and school supplies are among the donation room.

“We are trying to do is remove every barrier that would keep them from coming to school,” says Cox.

Cox explains how some teachers stop by to collect items for their students, while others are unaware of the program.

“We’re still working on educating our school system because we may know that we have homeless students, but we don't know what we are doing with them to help them,” says Cox.

To Mr. Cox, the donation room is just the beginning to tackle this problem.

If you would like to help, the program needs underwear, especially for girls. One can make donations and drop off to the AISD building located in downtown Abilene at 241 Pine street.
