Lake Abilene reaches 100% capacity

ABILENE, TX — According to state park officials, the Abilene lake has reached 100% capacity along with a few other bodies of water this week.

But how exactly is a lakes maximum capacity measured? You asked, and we found out.

"For Lake Abilene, there is a standpipe that the water starts to pour into when the water starts to pour into that pipe and then flow out into elm creek that is when the lake is full," says Abilene State Park Superintendent Ryan Hunter.

That's for Abilene. Each body of water has its own indicator or method for calculating a lake's volume.

In the meantime, Hunter says lake Abilene is doing a good job of holding back water which would otherwise create worse flooding in areas of Taylor County.

"It’s held several feet of water back already and will continue to do so in the coming days,” says Hunter.

There is an emergency spillway located in the lake and hunter says if that begins to spill over then things will get serious quick.
