SAN ANGELO, Texas — High school can be very stressful at times. However, San Angelo Lake View High School students are taking some time to relax and connect.

Lake View has been running their floral design class since the beginning of the 2019 school year. The course is currently offered to students from 9th -12th grades.

"The most challenging part is that you have to have a really good eye and check out what's missing. The most funnest part is that you get to create whatever you want," Maya Vasquez, Lake View senior, said.

The courses offered are levels one and two certification. Level Two students are able to take a floral certification test that allows them to become certified floral designers.

"Ultimately what we're trying to do is get these kids some employable skills. And with the floral design class level one, there is a certification that they can take through the Texas State Floral Association," Jennifer Urbanek, floral design instructor, said.

Urbanek is the only certified floral design teacher is the San Angelo Independent School District and says the floral design industry has always been something that she has had an interest in pursuing.

"When I was approached by it, I immediately started going to classes that would teach me how to teach floral design. So, I continue to go to classes through Texas State Floral Association and I will continue until I'm done teaching," she said. "Not only are they in here having fun, but they are learning things that will eventually get them a job if they choose to go into the floral industry."

Lake View students sell their floral designs, ranging in price from $5 to $50 with all proceeds going back to the school to be used for projects and supplies.
