COLEMAN COUNTY, Texas — An 18-year-old from Cross Plains died Sunday when the pickup truck he was driving crashed and overturned, ejecting him, on US Hwy 84, 12 miles northwest of Coleman.

A Texas Department of Public Safety preliminary crash report said Ryan Lee Hopkins, 18, of Cross Plains, was driving a pickup truck south on US 84 early Sunday morning. The truck crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and kept leaving the roadway.

The truck went through a culvert, hit a fence and then overturned. Hopkins was ejected from the truck because he was not wearing his seatbelt, the report said.

His passenger, a 16-year-old from Cross Plains, was not wearing a seatbelt, but was not ejected in the crash. The passenger was taken to Hendricks Memorial South for treatment of incapacitating injury, DPS said.
