SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State University's Department of Computer Science will host its annual ASU Code Camp for junior high and high school students July 5-16.

The course will be conducted virtually using Khan Academy online resources.

The interactive, two-week camp is free and open to students interested in computer programming, coding and creating animations using JavaScript software. Instructors will include ASU faculty and students, as well as professionals from TimeClock Plus.

"Our first virtual Code Camp in 2020 was a great success," Dr. Erdogan Dogdu, Computer Science Department chair, said in a press release. "We virtually hosted approximately 100 students of all ages and this year we expect even more students. Our faculty, student tutors and TCP partners will be hosting training sessions in small groups and all students will get the attention and the help they need. Students will learn computer programming using JavaScript, one of the most popular programming languages."

Camp participants will collaborate with the instructors in hands-on programming, including a variety of topics, challenges and projects.

Instruction will take place through daily online video conference sessions that will run Monday through Friday, July 5-9 and 12-16, on the following schedule:

  • 10 a.m. - noon
  • 1-3 p.m.
  • 3-5 p.m.

Although not mandatory, participation in all the sessions is highly recommended.

In addition to leading the camp projects, instructors will be available to assist participants with questions and help them trouble shoot as they learn to solve problems and program independently.

Technology required to participate includes a personal computer or laptop and internet access. An ASU Code Camp Certificate will be emailed to each participant at the end of the camp.

Advance registration is required and can be completed online on the Code Camp website at angelo.edu/code-camp.
