AR Kids Read helping increase reading proficiency

AR Kids Read is looking for tutors who can commit to one hour a week.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Wednesday, three kids from Williams Magnet Elementary did a gutsy thing.

They stood up in front of state education and business leaders, and a packed house at the Regional Innovation Hub in North Little Rock, and read them a story. As they read, 15 business leaders symbolically built a pyramid that symbolized how reading proficiency builds a stronger community.

All of this was staged by AR Kids Read, an organization dedicated to getting kids reading at the appropriate level by grade three. Why grade three?

“Because kids at third grade that's who we're focused on. You learn to read through third grade and after third grade you read to learn,” said Congressman French Hill.

And a child that's behind in their reading skill by fourth grade, only falls further behind in school.
