SAN ANGELO, Texas — Evelyn Howell is 99 years old.

"Last one of my family..... I am it," Howell said.

Howell will celebrate her 100th birthday with family and friends Sunday Oct. 13 at a San Angelo care center.

"We didn’t use to celebrate birthdays that much, my mom made us a cake. We didn’t go all out like people do now," Howell said.

Howell was born in 1919, a year before women got the right to vote. A century later, the life she once knew has changed right before her eyes.

"I lived through The Dust Bowl, The Depression, two wars maybe more. It’s just been a crazy time and now things are better and worse," Howell said.

In the last 10 decades, Howell went to college at Texas Tech, met and married the love of her life, and had four children. Events and people have come and gone, but her passion for playing the piano has stuck around.

Howell said she’s grateful for her health and the experiences that have shaped her.

“I won’t have any future. I will probably die right in this building, but I might live to be 200 who knows,” Howell said.
