When you're headed down U.S.Hwy 277, you may want to make this *pit stop* in Sonora, Texas.

"We found this little building that used to be a 50's or 60's diner and we restored it,” Witt Peasley, owner of Pitt Stop BBQ said. “Now it's a restaurant again."

Peasley used to own a restaurant with the same name in Miles, Texas. When he moved back to Sonora, he decided to open a new one. Peasley has always enjoyed barbecue.  He has been making it for over 20 years.

"The long, slow cooking is what I like the best,” Peasley said. “It's kind of a labor of love."

On their menu,  you’ll find classic barbecue options with a Tex-Mex flare.

"It’s Texas so you have to have brisket, turkey, a lot of pork and sausage,” Peasley said.

One of the restaurant’s popular crossover items is their “El Gordo” taco plate. It's a huge plate of food with two tacos stuffed with pulled pork, your choice of sausage, cheddar cheese, tangy barbecue sauce, chipotle ranch and a homemade pico de gallo. It also comes with two sides.

"We just wanted to be creative,” Peasley said. “We wanted to get people to laugh a little bit and that was the whole idea."

If you are looking for something more classic, try their fall-off-the-bone pork ribs. They are tender, and seasoned to perfection.

"We do all of our cooking on locally smoked mesquite wood, which is my personal favorite," Peasley said.

In my opinion, at a BBQ restaurant,  the sides have to be just as good as the meats. At Pit Stop BBQ, they do not disappoint. The restaurant offers potato salad, beans, cream corn and a coleslaw that is to die for.

"We do 90% of our stuff in-house,” Peasley said. “We like to make it special for people and you can taste the difference."

The atmosphere at Pit Stop BBQ is something to enjoy as well when you come for a bite.

"We probably have added 30 additional license plates from people saying hey, my state isn't up there, take this one,” Peasley said.

The future for Pit Stop BBQ is nowhere but up. They just won the 2019 Sonora “Business of the Year” award and they hope to win more. Peasley plans on growing the business but he never wants to shy away from his goal: offering something for everybody.

"Take a look at our menu online,” Peasley said. “Try to see something that doesn't grab your attention.”
