BROWNWOOD, Texas — The Brownwood Police Department has opened an unattended death investigation after a 49-year-old woman was found dead in her front yard Sunday afternoon.

At approximately 4:10 p.m. Sunday, BPD officers responded to a home on Avenue H regarding a report of a dead person.

When officers arrived at the home, they met with the reporting citizens in the front yard who explained they found Kelli Holland Chandler Wills, 49, dead. Her body was found in a corner of the home's front yard.

An unattended death investigation was started.

In the investigation, no physical sign of trauma or injury was observed by officers. Wills’ medical history showed a varied list of health issues, the BPD said. Her body was sent for an autopsy.

The police department said when its communications center received the 911 call about the death, they also received information that her husband, Cody Joe Wills, 45, was leaving the scene in his vehicle.

Officers on their way to the call were able to find Cody Wills and initiated a traffic stop on 6th Street. Wills was found to have a warrant for his arrest out of Brown County for motion to revoke aggravated assault. He was arrested for the warrant that is unrelated to the unattended death.

Cody Wills was interviewed about Kelli Wills’ death before being released to Brown County Jail staff.

"We, at the Brownwood Police Department extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Ms Wills and our prayers are for them in this trying time. We also understand that the circumstances surrounding Ms Wills death and Mr Wills behavior on this day are not normal.  As we continue to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of Ms Wills death, we ask for patience," the department said in a release.

The investigation is expected to take time as assigned investigators work the case and draw information from the factual evidence received and continue to gather.

The BPD said no further information is available.
