SAN ANTONIO — CPS Energy continues to report numerous outages late Wednesday night amid cold weather and freezing rain in the San Antonio area, conditions which the utility says has caused some damage resulting in the outages.
Upwards of 40,000 CPS Energy customers in the metro woke up to no electricity Wednesday morning as crews got to work. The number has dropped to around 4,500 by 4:45 a.m. Thursday.
Many of the outages are in the Fair Oaks Ranch area and parts of the far north side.
Crews continue working overnight to address the issues and restore electricity.
According to the National Weather Service, forecasts call for rain to continue through Thursday with temperatures hovering around freezing in the Alamo City. Ice accumulation on trees and power lines is expected to continue and temperatures are not expected to rise to allow thawing until Thursday at the earliest.
The weight of ice on branches and power lines can lead to pole fires and downed lines and CPS Energy officials are reminding customers to not approach a downed line and to treat them as live. Instead, report any downed lines to (210) 353-HELP(4357).
CPS Energy says that due to weather conditions, outages are likely to continue possibly into Thursday morning before temperatures begin to rise Thursday afternoon. They are asking customers to be prepared with emergency plans and be able to relocate safely, if needed and you are experiencing an extended outage, especially if using medical equipment. To manage bills, customers are encouraged to conserve energy by lowering the thermostat to the optimal winter setting of 68 degrees.
As crews work to restore power, CPS Energy is also reminding drivers to slow down and be wary of crews.
