Fans lose out on free mattresses after Astros' heartbreaking loss

This year, Mattress Mack got insurance to back up his bet after giving away more than $12 million in mattress money last year.

HOUSTON — It’s the slogan that circled the city: If the Astros win it all in the World Series, well, so do you. Your Gallery Furniture mattress is free.

But we all know how that ends.

“We were hoping and praying that we’d get to the World Series and win the World Series and help the customer get their money back, but it didn’t work out," said Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale. "But our boys gave it all they had, and they did a great job the whole year."

Had the Astros won, Mattress Mack says they would have given back $30 million to Gallery Furniture customers.

“It was all insured. What was stressful was paying the insurance premium. But after I got that paid, there was no stress the whole year. Just hoping and praying the Astros would win it all," Mack said.

This year, Mack says he got insurance to back up his bet after giving away more than $12 million in mattress money last year.

“I had to bet on the Astros in Nevada a couple of times to hedge off some of the liability, but that wasn’t necessary this year," Mack said.

An Astros fan to the core, Mattress Mack says he wanted to win, but he, like so many others, is just thankful for what we got.

“You know, they won the World Series last year and almost made it this year. The Astros are a tremendous source of hope and joy to the entire community," Mack said.

Mattress Mack says they are 90 percent sure they’ll bring back the promotion next season, and they’re already trying to figure out what they can do for the Rockets.
