#FitwithFox: Finding your strength through powerlifting

Powerlifting continues to gain more recognition across the county. In tonight's #FitwithFox, we take you inside a gym who is teaching all different types of powerlifting.

A local gym is allowing people to participate in different types of powerlifting.

"I like to be happy, listen to music before I compete," said Tommy Janusz, co-owner of the bar athletic club.

Tommy Janusz has been powerlifting for 10 years now. It all started when he was a student at Texas A&M University.

"They had a powerlifting team," said Janusz."I showed up the next day and joined."

At his gym, the bar athletic club, he is definitely raising the bar when it comes to fitness.

"Powerlifting, weightlifting, we have some bodybuilding folks," he said.

At the gym, he coaches different types of powerlifting. As a teacher, one of the types he showcases is raw powerlifting.

"Wearing a belt, maybe some knee sleeves, something just for cushion," he said.

Another type he teaches is equipped powerlifting. This type involves the lifter wearing extra equipment to add weight.

"You wear squat sits and knee wraps and bench shirts," he said.

Strength is one of the five components of fitness. Janusz said lifting can help strengthen your bones and build muscle. He added that the end results can help the body tremendously.

"The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism is," he said.

Deadlifting can be a full body workout.

"You are pretty much working your entire body basically expect your chest your pectorals," Janusz said.

However, powerlifting can cause major injuries if you are in-experienced.

"Doing the wrong thing over and over again wearing your knees down..that could cause a knew or shoulder injury," Janusz said.

Powerlifting also includes bench presses and squatting. To get involved in powerlifting, Janusz suggests finding someone who knows about it, or getting a coach.

"I've seen an 85-year-old blind man compete, so anyone can do it," Janusz said. "Strength is never a weakness."
