The Fort Concho speaker series featured Jake Landers, a retired range specialist. Landers spoke about his childhood and referenced poems he wrote about his experiences in life.
Landers said a major issue right now in the agriculture industry is how global warming is causing natural disasters. He said also hindering the industry is that fact that children are not wanting to take over family ranches. Although, he said, non-ranchers are becoming more and more interested in that lifestyle.
"Land prices have gone up because of the demand for recreation or retirement homes. They're not necessarily interested in ranching, they're interested in a ranching life," Landers said.
Landers said these issues may not affect farmers, ranchers or consumers immediately, but generations to come will have to deal with the increased need for water and food production.
