'I continue to ask Governor Abbott to open the doors of our businesses': San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter pushes for more openings

At Tuesday's city council meeting, Mayor Gunter emphasized the need for more businesses to reopen.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter used Tuesday's city council meeting as an opportunity to thank the citizens and leadership of San Angelo for slowing the spread of COVID-19, provide updates on the State of san Angelo's local businesses, and speak about plans moving forward.

According to Mayor Gunter, the COVID-19 positivity rate this past week in San Angelo was 7.7%. Last week, the percentage was 6.8%, so while there was a slight rise, Mayor Gunter praised citizens for keeping the percentage under the 10% threshold.

"It through all the leadership of San Angelo and our citizens' amazing strong west Texas character that we have not seen huge spikes in cases," she said.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 positivity rate isn't the only percentage in the city that is above 7%. According to Mayor Gunter, the unemployment rate in San Angelo is also more than 7%. Before the pandemic, it was 3%. Gunter said she is urging Governor Abbott to allow more businesses to re-open.

"In San Angelo, we are a city of small business. We are not a city of large corporations. I stand behind you. I will fight for you. We want all businesses to reopen and play a part in the financial recovery of this city.  I continue to ask Governor Abbott to open the doors of our businesses. All of our businesses deserve the opportunity to serve the citizens of San Angelo by opening their doors," she said.

On Monday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott posted a tweet Monday that would seem to suggest the shutdown of bars in the state could be coming to an end.

Gov. Abbott's tweet featured a GIF of two beer glasses being raised in a toast. In the tweet, he wrote:

"Texans have continued to keep COVID under control. The hospitalizations, number of new positive cases, and positivity rate remain contained. Today was one of the lowest for fatalities in a long time. I will be announcing more openings soon. Cheers!"
