SAN ANGELO — A 32-year-old Mertzon man died in an early Tuesday morning crash on U.S. Hwy. 67. A Texas Department of Public Safety press release has identified the man as Matthew Ryan Werkeiser.

According to the release, a 2015 Mack 600 truck tractor, towing a 2018 Pro Hauler semi-trailer, driven by a 35-year-old Mission man, was facing north, stopped on Hwy 67. The driver of the truck was waiting for southbound traffic to clear, in order to turn west onto private property. Werkeiser was driving a 2011 Dodge Caravan that DPS said struck the towed trailer.

According to the release, Werkeiser failed to control speed prior to the collision. Werkeiser was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Fred Buck.

The crash was investigated by Trooper Michael Tanzi of DPS San Angelo, with the assistance of troopers Jason McMillan and Eric Young, both of San Angelo and Scott Keane of Big Lake and Sgt. Tim Marlatt of San Angelo.
