Nonprofit organizations look forward to Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a way to promote charitable acts of giving.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Thousands of non-profits in West Texas and all around the world look forward to 'Giving Tuesday,' which occurs every Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Giving Tuesday is a movement that is meant to encourage global generosity, such as supporting non-profit organizations through donations, volunteering and more.

"What's great about it is, because it's on the internet, you can do nonprofits that are here in San Angelo that you care about, and really anywhere in the country," said Ami Mizell-Flint, the director of the San Angelo Clubhouse.

In 2019, at least $1.97 billion were donated in 24 hours in the United States alone. In 2020, directors of non-profits, like Brittney Jones from the Concho Valley Home for Girls, say they need the community's help now more than ever.

"We're pretty used to working with little, but this year we've had to work with even less than normal because nobody has the extra money to donate to places," she said.

Mizell-flint said her organization has also experienced a decrease in funds and donations.

"A lot of people are just trying to make it through the pandemic and don't have extra money to spare. We need to find a way to just build back up what we've lost," she said.

She encourages members of the community to choose a few favorite organizations and give what you can.

"Not everybody's in the position to be able to give, but if they are, pick your favorite organizations that mean the most to you and make a donation to them," she said.

Most organizations have links on their websites or Facebook pages that allow you to donate online.
