SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo Police Department issued a warning Thursday about a new phone scam designed to prey on the elderly.

From an SAPD Facebook post:

"The SAPD has received calls regarding scammers spoofing our dispatch phone number (325-657-4315) and calling elderly individuals demanding money from them. We will NOT contact you requesting Green Dot money cards, Apple/Google play gift cards, or any other form of payment. These scammers will use scare tactics to try and make their victims pay large amounts of money for fake warrants or bail for loved ones. If you have any questions or need to determine the validity of a phone call, please contact our desk duty officer during normal business hours at 325-481-2696 or call our non-emergency dispatch 325-657-4315 directly and request to speak with an officer.
