Murder charge for man involved in Tuesday's shooting on San Angelo's northwest side

A 43-year-old San Angelo man is in custody and charged with murder after a shooting on Walnut Street that left a 28-year-old man dead.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A San Angelo man was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on a murder charge at 10:05 p.m. Tuesday. Gabriel James Ortiz Sr., 43, is being held without bond, according to jail records. 

At approximately 4:26 p.m. Tuesday, San Angelo Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of Walnut Street for the report of a shooting victim. While en route, responding officers were updated with the suspect’s clothing description and location of the victim.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., responding officers found the suspect in the 2000 block of Bailey Street. The suspect, later identified as Ortiz, was taken into custody and detained without incident.

The shooting victim, San Angelo resident Ernesto Hernandez, 28, was found dead in the backyard of a nearby residence. Justice of the Peace J.P. McGuire formally pronounced Hernandez dead at the scene.

The SAPD’s Crime Scene Investigations Unit responded to assist with the follow-up investigation and multiple patrol units were utilized to cordon off the area.

Ortiz has been charged with murder.

This is an ongoing investigation and the SAPD said additional information will be released when it becomes available.
