Sweet moment: George W. Bush slips Michelle Obama another piece of candy during funeral

George W. Bush also handed Michelle Obama a cough drop during late Sen. John McCain's funeral.

In a sweet moment during George H.W. Bush’s funeral on Wednesday, the late president’s son George W. Bush appeared to give former first lady Michelle Obama a piece of candy.

When Bush greeted President Donald Trump, the former presidents and first ladies in the Washington National Cathedral, he appeared to slip something into Michelle Obama’s fingers as they shook hands.

Michelle and Barack Obama laughed in response.

The gesture has become a tradition between the two. During the late Sen. John McCain’s funeral in September, Bush handed Obama a cough drop. The moment, which also happened at the National Cathedral in Washington, went viral on social media.

In an interview with NBC’s “Today” in October, Michelle Obama said she didn’t realize anyone was watching “the simple gesture” during McCain’s funeral.

"And I will add that they were old cough drops," Obama said, describing them as being in an official White House box. "And I was like, 'How long have you had these?' They said, 'A long time. We got a lot of these.' "

Obama also said she and Bush are “forever seatmates” because they usually sit next to each other during official events, according to protocol. “So he is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the formers gather,” she said.
