Local wounded combat veteran to receive vehicle from local car dealership

The vehicle will be presented to retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. George Campbell at a local dealership.

Retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. George Campbell will be presented with a 2020 GMC Terrain at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5 at Mitchell Buick-GMC, 4105 Sherwood Way.

According to a press release from the dealership, Wells Fargo in collaboration with Mitchell Buick-GMC, will sponsor the donation of the payment-free vehicle through the Military Warriors Support Foundation’s Transportation4Heroes program.

Campbell is a veteran who received many awards, including a Purple Heart for being wounded in combat, according to the release.

He wanted to serve his country and came from a long line of military service members, the release said. He joined the U.S. Army in 1994 and served more than four years and was stationed in West Virginia, prior to enlisting in the Air National Guard. While in the U.S. Air National Guard, he earned the rank of staff sergeant and was stationed in South Carolina, Arizona, Texas, Virginia and North Carolina.

Campbell was wounded in June 2005, while deployed to Iraq and while supporting combat operations. He received a Purple Heart for his injuries. He was medically retired after 17 years of military service and received several other awards for his heroism and service. Those awards included an Air Force Organizational Excellence Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster and Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.

Campbell currently lives in San Angelo with his children.

The Military Warriors Support Foundation has awarded approximately 900 mortgage-free homes through its Homes4WoundedHeroes and Homes4GoldStars program as well as helped veterans wounded in combat, Gold Star Spouse and their families pay off personal debt through financial mentorship.
