SAN ANGELO, Texas — An exit sign that should have had the name of a historic San Angelo road caused quite a buzz on social media this week. The Ben Ficklin Road exit off South Bryant Boulevard instead read "Ben Fricklin Rd".

John DeWitt, director of transportation planning and development for the Texas Department of Transportation, said the errant spelling was a fabrication error.

"The contractor placed the errant Ben Ficklin sign on Monday." DeWitt said in an email to FOX West Texas. "TxDOT forces removed it today. Upon notification of the error, the contractor is fabricating a replacement panel that will be shipped overnight to the job site, and replaced expeditiously under contract at no cost to the State."

FOX West Texas attempted to get comment from the manufacturer, Collins & Hermann, Inc., via telephone and email. At the time of publication, those messages had not been returned.

The Ben Ficklin Road sign is part of a $3,089,229 project to upgrade and replace signage on the state highway system that is deficient in some manner, DeWitt said.

To TxDOT's knowledge, the Ben "Fricklin" error is the only one that has occurred.
