The deadline to register for an absentee ballot is a day away

Before someone can register for an absentee ballot there are requirements a voter must meet.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Election day draws closer and closer, and early voting ends next week.

However, the registration for an absentee ballot is Friday, Oct. 23. Tom Green County Election Coordinator Vona Hudson is making sure every vote counts.

"To make sure their vote counts is just to be sure that they follow all the instructions on the ballot by mail when they're returning it to us," Hudson said. "We need to make sure that they sign the back of the envelope that they're returning to us, which is the yellow one."

Other requirements to be able to register for absentee ballot is a person must 65 years or older.

They must have a disability, and they must be out of the county on Election Day and during the period for early voting.

If they are confined in jail, but otherwise eligible, or certified for participation in the address confidentiality program.

Hudson stresses the most important thing is make sure everyone signs the dotted line.

"They can go ahead and mail it and we'll take it, but the biggest thing is to make sure you get it signed and make sure that you get it to us in time," Hudson said. "We are having the extended period for voter to turn it in person this time."

After some states were having signatures problems which were causing some ballots to become void and the vote not counting. The problem came because signatures were not matching.

However Hudson confirms her team is doing everything to make sure everyone's vote counts.

"It's clear that it has to be the voter themselves because we have to see their photo I.D. and they have to sign a piece of paper," Hudson said. "The only place you can do that is in my office that's what the court order that you only have one location."

The final day to register for an absentee ballot is Friday Oct. 23, and the last day to early vote is is Friday Oct. 30.
