Pride Week events kick off with candlelight vigil June 16

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Open Arms Rape Crisis Center and LGBT+ Services is celebrating Pride Week June 16-June 23 with a variety of events around the city.

“Pride is more important now than ever,” Lanie Rogers, LGBT+ services advocate at Open Arms, said. “It’s about raising awareness, education, dignity, and equal rights.”

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Embrace, Encourage, Empower.” The full schedule of events is as follows:

JUNE 16

5 p.m. - Candlelight vigil: A time to remember and honor those in the LGBT+ community who have died as victims of violent hate crimes. The vigil will be held in the St. Paul Presbyterian Church courtyard, 11 N. Park St.

6 p.m. - Drag bingo: "Let’s taco ‘bout drag" with drag queens calling bingo numbers. Admission is $5 and includes a taco bar. Bingo cards are one for $2; three for $5; and 10 for $15. Drag Bingo will be held at The Beauregard, 1421 W. Beauregard Ave.

JUNE 17

Noon - 5 p.m. - Status testing: Free, confidential HIV/AIDS testing at Open Arms,113 N. Harrison St.

JUNE 18

5 p.m.- 9 p.m. Dine for a Cause: Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, 2702 Southwest Blvd., will donate 15 percent of food purchases between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. to Open Arms.

JUNE 19

6 p.m.- 8 p.m. - “Endless Summer Nights” Skate Night: Free 80s-themed skate night at Angelo Skate & Fun Center, 34 Buick St. Costume contest for the best 80’s attire and a fundraiser for the LGBT+ Youth Support Group.

JUNE 20

6 p.m. - 8 p.m. - Trans Talk, Panel and Legal Clinic: An information and panel discussion in the Stephens Central Library third floor Community Room, 33 W. Beauregard Ave. Featured panelists include Dr. Jenny Wiggins-Smith, Claire Bow and the Rev. Dr. Timothy Davenport-Herbst. Legal Aid of Northwest Texas will provide a legal clinic for those who want information on name and gender marker changes, as well as, civil remedies for sexual assault.

JUNE 21

9 p.m. - “Night of Illusions” Drag Show & Pageant: The Night of Illusions drag show at The Beauregard, 1421 W. Beauregard Ave. IDs will be checked at the door. There is a $5 cover for 21+ and $10 cover for 18-21. Mr. & Ms. Pride San Angelo will be crowned.

JUNE 22 

6 p.m. - Roller Derby PRIDE Activity: The San Angelo Roller Girls will be hosting a PRIDE activity at the San Angelo Inline Hockey Rink, 1405 Edmund Blvd. T-shirts will be available for $20.

JUNE 23

5 p.m. - “Family Fun Day” at the lake: A family-friendly gathering at Pecan Pavilion, 8455 S. Country Club Road. Food vendors, community agencies and local product vendors will be on-site. There will also be cornhole tournaments, a volleyball tournament and kayaking.
