Granville Gilstrap, 87, known as "Gil" to his fellow vets, was presented a small token of appreciation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart San Angelo Chapter 740 Thursday.

"It's a great pleasure for the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 740 and our commander, Commander Chris Dogget, to present this small token of our appreciation," Juan Rubio, a fellow member, said.

Rubio and others presented Gil with a baseball cap with the words "Combat Wounded" and a sweatshirt which reads "Veteran."

The group decided to honor Gil with the tokens to show their appreciation as one of the beginning members of the organization and for his contributions to the group.

"I love it," Gilstrap said. "I enjoy it, and I appreciate it very much," he said.

The organization helps not only purple heart recipients but other fellow veterans who may need assistance.

On Oct. 23 the organization is hosting its 5th annual golf tournament at the Brentwood Country Club.
