Rufflife: Animal shelter opens its doors to distribute free dog food

"We want to make sure animals are taken care of and people during this time"

The Taylor Jones Humane Society in Abilene provides free dog food during regular business hours. Because of city closures and recommendations to practice social distancing, the shelter has chosen to shut its doors temporarily.

Friday afternoon, shelter staff decided to continue to distribute the free dog food, in an effort to help those who may be struggling.

"We haven't been able to do it because we've been closed during COVID but we felt the need to open today to hand out food to help those who are really struggling there are so many people out of work right now and we want to make sure the animals are taken care of as well as the people," Melissa O'Neill said.

The shelter wants to make sure both animals and people are taken care of, she said.

"COVID has affected everyone from healthcare workers to the food industry and ever here at the TJHS. We aren't able to be open due to some of our volunteers being health compromised," O'Neill.

Although the shelter is unable to adopt out at the moment, O'Neill said shelter pets are well taken care of and ready to start seeing visitors again.
