The San Angelo police department is set to receive 173 rifle resistant body armor vests.

The City approving the grant for $98,000 from the office of the Governor at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The department applied for the grant back in August 2017.

Public information Officer Tracy Gonzalez says each officer in the department is set to receive a level 5 vest.

Tracy Gonzalez says, “what we've seen in recent years is not only the increase in active shooting events but officer ambush situations, and the vests that we've been issued aren’t adequate in protecting from these high power rifles, so giving us the tools we need is going to allow us to respond to these incidents and stay safe.”

Gonzalez says the department has sent the purchase order for the vests to the City, but there is no set date for when they will receive them.
