Plane leaving Mathis Field crashes near Stephens County Airport

The crash sparked roughly two acres of grass fire before the flames were extinguished.

BRECKENRIDGE, Texas —

According to a post from the Breckenridge Fire Department, a plane crashed near Stephens County Airport, causing roughly two acres of grass to catch fire.  

Breckenridge Fire Department C shift responded to the fire at approximately 12:45 p.m. Monday. 

BFD used multiple bottles of foam and nearly 2,000 gallons of water in order to put the fire out.  

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the cause of the crash.   

Multiple agencies assisted with the crash scene, including: the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, Stephens County judge, the Breckenridge Police Department, Sacred Cross Ambulance Service and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
