ABILENE, Texas — The Mall of Abilene celebrates its 40th year since it first opened its doors in 1979.

It is the biggest mall ever built in the Big Country. The first grand opening welcomed over 50,000 people.

"We draw probably from at least 45 to 50 miles away,” says general manager, Steven Niles.

Many stores have remained opened since 1979 such as JCPenney and Dillard’s.

"We're 96 percent occupied at this point and it’s something that we continually look to add new and fresh retail opportunities,” says Niles.
